Chapter Backround

The American Red Cross, Jersey Coast Chapter, is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Red Cross is not a government agency, and the Chapter seeks no United Way funds. The Jersey Coast Chapter’s funds are provided by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations, product contributions and service cost recovery revenues.

The Jersey Coast Chapter was founded in 1917 along with several other chapters in Monmouth County . During World War II, all Monmouth County chapters were united into one chapter that was headquartered in Shrewsbury in a residential house in Shrewsbury . The Board of Directors, in the early 1960’s, voted to expand the Chapter’s facility by taking down the residential building and replacing it with a larger chapter house.

In 1992, the Monmouth Chapter and Ocean Chapter merged to become the Jersey Chapter. In September of 2000, the Chapter made a major move from their Chapter house in Shrewsbury to the current Chapter headquarters located in Tinton Falls . A satellite office still remains in Toms River .
